Internal Medicine Residency:Internship Application Procedures All selections for first-year resident positions are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). For the June 2013 starting date, we accept only applications made through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). The deadline for applications is December 15, 2012, but we encourage you to complete and submit your application as soon as possible. Please submit the following through ERAS: 1)Application 2)Personal Statement 3)Medical School Transcript 4)Dean's Letter 5)Three letters of recommendation (including one from the Chair of the Department of Medicine) 6) USMLE Transcripts (sent directily from NBME to ERAS.) For international medical graduates, you must have your California Letter before the deadline for applications. Useful applicant information can be found at the following websites: AAMC – Association of American Medical Colleges ERAS – Electronic Residency Application Service FREIDA – Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database (FREIDA) NRMP – National Resident Matching Program Categorical Program The First-Year Resident Selection Committee will invite a limited number of applicants to arrange for an interview and to see the facilities at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The selection of interns is based upon the following criteria: (1) Strong motivation to provide optimal medical care for predominantly medically-underserved patients (2) Performance in college and medical school, not limited to GPA alone (3) Interest and ability in teaching (4) Other activities, such as interests within or outside medicine, including research (5) Personal interview (6) Interest in Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and its specific character and goals. After review of application material in ERAS, we will be offering interviews for Categorical Medicine by invitation only. Because we are a relatively small program with only 17 Categorical Medicine positions, the number of interviews has been limited to about 30% of applicants. We expect to have about this same number of interviews this year. Preliminary Year Program An interview is not required, but most candidates will arrange a visit to see the facilities and meet some of the faculty. We plan to have a small number of "information sessions" on Saturday morning for preliminary medicine applicants; these are non-mandatory. For those interviewing for a position in one of the other Departments at Harbor-UCLA, this may be a convenient day for a visit to the Department of Medicine. The selection of interns is based upon the same criteria as our categorical program. |
